Dating back 5,000 years ago, Ayurveda, a sister science of yoga, is known as the “Science of Life”. Based on the ideas of creating balance in the body, Ayurveda is often referred to as the “Mother of All Healing”.
Q: What is a Mind-Body Constitution?
A: In Ayurveda, there are three doshas that reflect the governing principles of nature; vata (air), pitta (fire) and kapha (earth-water). Each person is a unique combination of these principles which contributes to our body type as well as our emotional and mental constitution.
Prakriti is the natural state you are born with and represents your natural state at equilibrium. This constitution can be influenced and change due to diet, climate, stress, and change in season and causing imbalances known as Vikriti. Ayurveda strives to return these three doshas into balance.
Q: What are Ayurveda’s guiding principles?
A: Daily routine is extremely important to maintain balance in body and mind. By bringing awareness to how our habits and external environment influence our being, we can tune our body with nature to maintain centeredness.
Q: What will the program entail?
A: Before the program, participants will fill out two simple online questionnaires that ask about your body, climate preferences, sleep, and mental activity. As a wellness coach, I can use this information to help diagnosis your body-mind constitution and then share personalized lifestyle adjustments to maintain balance. We will work with yoga and pranayama according to your constitution. We will also learn how to eat for each body-mind constitution and how to eat for the season. Meals will include these healing foods. In Ayurveda we say, “You are what you digest”.
Q: What have been the most important gifts for you of practicing Ayurveda?
A: Confirming the knowledge I came in with as a child and tuning into my internal power to find balance. Growing up in a desert, I had certain troubles. After moving to Hawaii it was interesting to see how the difference in climate and lifestyle changed my digestion and skin. I learned how the environment and diet impacts my constitution and how I can remain in balance.
Q: What excites you about sharing Ayurveda with others?
A: Sharing this wisdom can enlighten someone’s life and give them tools to bring their lives back to balance. By offering small secrets and changes from Ayurveda, I can help others by shedding light into their life.
